Middle Schoolers Learn Money Management!

Lizzie Williams, a Money & ME Trainer since 2016, is passionate about teaching financial literacy and was given the opportunity through “Future Business Leaders of America” (FBLA) to teach it to middle school students. Lizzie has two jobs: She is a middle school teacher, and the Executive Director of “Healing the World With the Word” ministry. She was able to combine both her roles and have a money management program at two different middle schools: Tuscaloosa Magnet School and Alberta School of Performing Arts (both in Alabama). Lizzie did some research and found that American teenagers spend over $90 billion each year. The average teenager spends $3,000 each year. She had the students add up all the money they get from their parents, jobs, birthdays and other celebrations. She said that gift cards are also considered income. She explained that a budget is having a plan for their money. They discussed where teens spend their money, and the importance of saving. She had 30 students participate in the classes, and each one received a special gift for coming. They all got a “Money & ME” color changing stadium cup, pencil, eraser, and candy. Thank you Lizzie for helping youth understand the importance of saving and budgeting!
